<span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>WHY IS MIDWEEK A GREAT TIMETO VISIT SUMMIT MEADOW CABINS?</strong></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Let me count the ways.....</strong></span></div>
<br />
<strong>GREAT RATES</strong>...Winter <strong>midweek night </strong>(Sun -Thurs )<strong> rates are lower than weekend rates</strong>.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have a GREAT winter midweek special ready for you to take advantage of, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">pay for 2 midweek winter nights and the 3rd is free</span></strong> </div>
Our midweek special is valid all winter except for the Christmas public school vacation and the Sunday nights of the three day holiday weekends, Martin Luther King and President's Day.<br />

<span style="color: black;"><strong></strong></span><br />
<span style="color: black;"><strong>NO CROWDS</strong>....Imagine getting a lazy start to your midweek day</span><br />
at one of our cabins and xc skiing around Trillium Lake seeing <br />
only a handful of folks. <br />
Find solitude at the dam at Trillium Lake. Better yet head up Shearer Burn Road or out to Mud Creek and find your own trails.<br />
<br />
<br />

<strong></strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong>MORE CABIN AVAILABILITY...</strong>you can generally get the cabin of your choice as well as make a last minute reservation when the weather and/or conditions are special. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfUT0cOmDHEE3rn8xwaZZrFytDjOUVqWstkj-2ZO9SnlwagsZmnk6tHG9sb2Ge89cfAicXckTQqbte4KJoHtRZAsOC3ecL1rVhCnVAYvBnowYWdtrL1iTihfC8RdUlxgZqj7p4WxvLAw/s1600/snoshoers_track_sign_winter+2011_IMG_0756.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfUT0cOmDHEE3rn8xwaZZrFytDjOUVqWstkj-2ZO9SnlwagsZmnk6tHG9sb2Ge89cfAicXckTQqbte4KJoHtRZAsOC3ecL1rVhCnVAYvBnowYWdtrL1iTihfC8RdUlxgZqj7p4WxvLAw/s200/snoshoers_track_sign_winter+2011_IMG_0756.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<strong>MIDWEEK GROOMING</strong>.....This is the 30th year have volunteered to do the xc ski and snowshoe trail grooming. Donations from those using these trails and a grant from Clackamas County Tourism pays for the rental of the grooming equipment and enables us to also groom an average of once/midweek, depending on conditions. <br />
<br />
<strong>LESS TRAFFIC</strong>.....what can I say, rarely is there midweek traffic to Mt Hood (outside of the midweek holiday periods.) <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>It makes for a much more pleasant experience.</strong></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">LET ME COUNT THE WAYS!</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This is the first time since we opened in 1982 that we have been able to drive into the cabins since February and are able to offer guests a snow free SPRING visit during the months of March, April and May. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>We have both midweek and weekend openings in all of our cabins during April and May.</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Guests can enjoy a visit without the typical summer crowds.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Summer hiking trails below about 5,000 feet in elevation are snow free. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Lakes that typically may not melt out until Late May or June are snow free and ready for summer boating fun.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The absolute best thing about operating Summit Meadow Cabins is all of the wonderful people we've developed long termed relationships with over the last 30+ years. Many of them have been visiting annually with the same group of folks on the same weekend for 20-30 years. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In several cases, the second generation now has the reservation and bring their folks. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At least 3 times a year a close group of creative friends from a coastal community come for a 3-6 day visit. They always leave "love notes" like the one below, kind words and lovely little gifts</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhalaec7IWjbHBBQTCSvlJzhK8fxgJSz2ZCOz0QgsdMJmc45fw5Y1nGhyphenhyphen9XDnKGl9zOvLbngCgqWtnVckEMJN74iXSfjElorIoZjp-gNMgJbSc8H2VP7Wny5iFxJql6gcelGIsFonjSVUQ/s1600/Heavenrich2_thanku_2015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhalaec7IWjbHBBQTCSvlJzhK8fxgJSz2ZCOz0QgsdMJmc45fw5Y1nGhyphenhyphen9XDnKGl9zOvLbngCgqWtnVckEMJN74iXSfjElorIoZjp-gNMgJbSc8H2VP7Wny5iFxJql6gcelGIsFonjSVUQ/s1600/Heavenrich2_thanku_2015.JPG" height="640" width="504" /></a></div>

Of course, we all want snow, but it's possible to enjoy these unusual, spring like conditions in Feb March that don't usually happen. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Lots of folks are rediscovering solitude at Trillium Lake by hiking around the lake and utilizing the new section of trail that starts at the east end of the "airstrip." The beaver lodges along the lake are even more apparent these days.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One multifamily group that have been winter guests for over 10 years, not only enjoyed a snowless weekend, but it also rained most of the time. They all smiled about, "making lemonade out of lemons" and rebooked the same weekend for next year. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A young couple, new guests, booked their honeymoon stay at Falls Cr Aframe several months ago. Their initial reaction to the lack of snow was disappointment and then it rained during most of their visit.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">He texted me just as they left </span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Thank you so much for the wonderful relaxing start to our marriage. We absolutely loved it! Have a wonderful day and thanks again.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Arial;">she left me the following note in the cabin. </span><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Thank you so much for letting us stay in your cabin. It was such a memorable time and we are so thankful we got to experience the quietness, peace and beauty of this place. We will definitely be back. Thanks again.</span> </span></blockquote>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The most amazing thing happened over the crazily busy Christmas-New Years vacation. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of our guests who passed us on the trail just before dark, overheard that a family of four, new to the Summit Meadows experience, were at the cabins but all the cabins were booked with others (yes, its along story). Bottom line, as we're struggling to find alternative lodging during the busiest time of the year, she offers to share her Chalet with the family. While these folks were strangers at the at moment, they certainly weren't after sharing their hospitality. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">That's what I mean, we just have great guests!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The winters have changed since I first moved to Government Camp in the early 1970s. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Having 8-13 feet of snow on the ground at the 4,000 foot level was more usual than not. Except, of course, for the drought years like 1976-77 when snow didn't come until January and then there wasn't all that much of it. That was </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">a great winter for ice skating on Trillium Lake!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In 1984 we had several feet on the ground as early as October 20 (the earliest date we've ever been snowed in at Summit Meadow). This made for an interesting trip to the birthing room at the local hospital from our home at Summit Meadow when our son was born on Nov 8. There was lots of snow that winter and it kept coming throughout April.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We started volunteering to groom the xc ski trails with a small snocat and a couple of feet was enough to start grooming and building a base. It's hard to believe we've been doing that for almost 30 years.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the late 1980s and the 1990s, winter still lasted from Nov-April, but snow depth was more like 4-6 feet on the ground at any one time. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now we have better grooming equipment, try to work with the powers to be to keep the road surface and drainage on the Trillium Lake Loop in good condition and with some luck have been able to groom the main trails with less than a foot of snow. We've been able to groom the Trillium trails and provide good conditions for xc skiers and snowshoers when other trails in the area are unskiable. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, what does this all mean? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Even if we don't have a rip roaring snowfall, some of the best xc ski and snowshoe conditions will be in the Trillium Lake Basin. </span><br />

When was the last time you remember seeing Trillium Lake frozen over with clear ice. <br />
My recollection was the late 1970s when we all went to Goodwill and bought the closest sized ice skates we could find and had a blast! <br />
<br />
Here's what it looked like on Thanksgiving eve this year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB_l_KlZnJQe9aOaYvNntmh3NkZgc-jLFZ_rOutoT9QhLow0FoJHnktly2zEnJ6w8H3FEjtX_bD7WjboOqWxHygYtYdhH3pEZ_a29gOotDrXr2PRw8l10LW9FqG13meKaWX8dMYBporc/s1600/IMG_0925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB_l_KlZnJQe9aOaYvNntmh3NkZgc-jLFZ_rOutoT9QhLow0FoJHnktly2zEnJ6w8H3FEjtX_bD7WjboOqWxHygYtYdhH3pEZ_a29gOotDrXr2PRw8l10LW9FqG13meKaWX8dMYBporc/s320/IMG_0925.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
December days have been something to remember. <br />
<br />
Starting with 30 hours of many, many inches of intense rain then turning to cold, dry snow, long enough for our 5-7 inch of base to become established. Who would have expected frigid, close to zero degree weather for a week after that?<br />
The good news is that the cold temperatures left us with a week of dry, powder snow skiing for our season's first grooming of the Trillium Lake Loop. <br />

Now the real question is when will we be snowed in????</h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I<strong> wish I knew, but the reality of the matter is we'll know after it happens. Our first real "dump" was Nov 5 and here's what it looked like.</strong></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGZnyOAGIcrMDCfxROZaos55ZpxkaMX6jUYcGYt_7LJe1PkwX7JIjjdvPX-OQT2YgFQ0f00x2yAwwN6BmtWRwt4dqjySOaj-YJNM2YI65sv0Yf9ykTQKOR6qJJiJcbb2vfeBz1mhLAJM/s1600/Snow_nov+5_GetAttachment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGZnyOAGIcrMDCfxROZaos55ZpxkaMX6jUYcGYt_7LJe1PkwX7JIjjdvPX-OQT2YgFQ0f00x2yAwwN6BmtWRwt4dqjySOaj-YJNM2YI65sv0Yf9ykTQKOR6qJJiJcbb2vfeBz1mhLAJM/s320/Snow_nov+5_GetAttachment.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>After that melted and we had the usual rain, clear, rain, mode, we got another blast of snow this weekend which left several inches of new.</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Weather for the next week looks more like rain than anything else so our new snow may melt again (or not!). </strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong></strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Bottomline, we'll know when we get snowed in after it happens. </strong></span><br />

It's a labor of love not only for Dave and now Jeremy, who volunteer their time to operate the snocat and do the grooming, but also for the local Government Camp Marketing Council and those of you who donate at the trailheads. These funds cover the snocat operating expenses. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Boy, have things changed!</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirxBbuetWrNBQ-4SqQKtyvLJiB3cLYLkSkvtihavcfgw6SdxbBBj7tXSfOfccYyzU4NER3smkKAx68Z03tFb7UJ3NnZi0PLzN1PuA14Rp8_Gek-sm6dE_qvR8wU6iZmzKEbL0-PE1oMgs/s1600/dave+and+jeremy+in+snowcat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirxBbuetWrNBQ-4SqQKtyvLJiB3cLYLkSkvtihavcfgw6SdxbBBj7tXSfOfccYyzU4NER3smkKAx68Z03tFb7UJ3NnZi0PLzN1PuA14Rp8_Gek-sm6dE_qvR8wU6iZmzKEbL0-PE1oMgs/s320/dave+and+jeremy+in+snowcat.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</span><span style="font-size: large;">Here's a picture of David & Jeremy with our first snocat a few years into the effort. The snocat pulled a "drag" that left a single double ski track for those skinny skis. Sometimes the snow was too heavy +/or deep to operate the snocat.Parts broke easily.Snowshoeing wasn't popular </span><span style="font-size: large;">& the few folks that did it, used the type that looked more like "Sargent Preston's.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now, Trillium continues to be a very popular winter destination, but not just for xc skiers. Weekends, my guess is that 80% of the folks at Trillium are snowshoers, sporting those lightweight, aluminum snowshoes, which allow any one that can walk to have fun and be a successful snowshoer. Many of these folks are new to winter +/or outdoor activities and they may only get out once or twice a year. Midweek sees mostly xc skiers at Trillium and many of those are also skiing further out.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong> </strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>So what does the grooming look like now?</strong></span><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Our current snocat is still ancient, but much bigger. We even have 2. Depending on the conditions, the snow can be track packed by the snocat alone, or we pull a large roller to reduce the volume. The side for xc skiers then gets a double wide xc ski track set. If we get a dump of 2-4 feet, it's not unusual to make 4 passes before the job is done. Other times it's one. In the end, there's a double wide flat lane for snowshoers (xc ski skaters, walkers & the occasional snowmobiler or dog sledder) and a double xc ski track, so folks can be side by side. </span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbuHagbQGad80y4njw9ov5QwoN2M8OoCZ0-WFHQYAqiHAfRweh92LtvNLv3gjKx6Sx7oPa-FZtefsur4VqYVQZNQUdLf03L6xAi_llTPefDcy4E75cvBYkfVNdMB53kqhACjzIHOWR3Hk/s1600/P1010044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbuHagbQGad80y4njw9ov5QwoN2M8OoCZ0-WFHQYAqiHAfRweh92LtvNLv3gjKx6Sx7oPa-FZtefsur4VqYVQZNQUdLf03L6xAi_llTPefDcy4E75cvBYkfVNdMB53kqhACjzIHOWR3Hk/s320/P1010044.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Another thing that has changed. You'll find Jeremy the one that volunteers the most to do the grooming these days. This winter (a fairly light snow year) </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">the Trillum Lake Loop and Hemlock were groomed 23 times. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Grooming has ended for this winter. You can follow the snow conditions at Trillium Lake by clicking on the Gov Camp Trail Condition Button at <a href="http://www.mounthoodinfo.com/">www.mounthoodinfo.com</a> next winter. </span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvyXeH782ns4enKnXDjfboMFNWSfZxSH114c2ix4gXf1D4o3RwvqphbnGk-0dY7_WsK1-w3ri2YLjkikExq6gFQAbZ-rcqDANeO2ps2vYLeZd69pH1U0fOm96O8mG0EIkPnfbc5bnY6dM/s1600/P1000925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvyXeH782ns4enKnXDjfboMFNWSfZxSH114c2ix4gXf1D4o3RwvqphbnGk-0dY7_WsK1-w3ri2YLjkikExq6gFQAbZ-rcqDANeO2ps2vYLeZd69pH1U0fOm96O8mG0EIkPnfbc5bnY6dM/s200/P1000925.JPG" width="200" /></a><br />
The sunny days and folks with smiles on their faces, the songs of the varied thrush, the first day of SPRING and<br />
the return of the juncos around the feeders, it's almost enough for me to imagine blooming trilliums. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrMvv6pDclPdyxe8hqK_3gLg8lW_uzHfq6-606WPbBq9FqbU4PrXUuOEb5gMR5yMshbXcpNCptLL63jVzZ6WS0ulrwLnSw_dlU8HpvOqRGTH8poeUqpbEltYwpLvz-kAIKSW-XTwtKiHQ/s1600/P1000997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrMvv6pDclPdyxe8hqK_3gLg8lW_uzHfq6-606WPbBq9FqbU4PrXUuOEb5gMR5yMshbXcpNCptLL63jVzZ6WS0ulrwLnSw_dlU8HpvOqRGTH8poeUqpbEltYwpLvz-kAIKSW-XTwtKiHQ/s320/P1000997.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, we get 7 inches over night, the temperatures drop into the 20s and it snows like mad for a day or two at a time. <br />
<br />
I remember the local mountain paper's weather observer reminding us that the record 24 hour snowfall of 22 inches was set last year on March 21 (funny, how I don't exactly remember that...). <br />
<br />

<br />
Folks that know me don't ask when we will be driving in this year. It's the same answer every year. "We'll know when we're driving in for sure after it happens......"<br />

January arrived after a series of storms with cold, dry snow not usually seen on Mt Hood for weeks at a time. <br />

(still w/cold, dry snow days), again somewhat of a novelty on the westside of Mt Hood, particularly when it goes on and on. <br />

The last week of January brought over 3 feet in 48 hours, followed by rain, all of which will slowly consolidate and add to our winter snowpack. While some folks wonder if there will be six more weeks of winter, those of us at Summit Meadow know it'll be winter here at least through April. <br />
<br />
February will be a GREAT time to enjoy the snow in and around Trillium Basin. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Don't forget,<strong> we have LOTS of midweek openings and a great winter midweek special. </strong><br />
<strong>Pay for 2 nights and th 3rd is free. </strong><a href="http://www.summitmeadow.com/"><strong>www.summitmeadow.com</strong></a><br />

<strong>We've got snow!</strong> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the last week, we've received 6-12 inches of new snow per day. There's been so much new, it's all we can do to machine track pack around the lake and Hemlock Tr. This new snow is settling down and will make a great base for the rest of the winter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Xc skiers and snowshoers are improving user tracks daily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLYl0wsc7jx7ZOiOpd-Yl0gDKWf-SHRonywMFOHIu8bQUxxn2qbBzzTRKJmptsz2iGJUXJUbIzSf8h6krtSgy2L8lNqblqXgjuV-U7pr1ZXPE2K_fOS60kQt9bME6gkqlVffWhku3zsYE/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLYl0wsc7jx7ZOiOpd-Yl0gDKWf-SHRonywMFOHIu8bQUxxn2qbBzzTRKJmptsz2iGJUXJUbIzSf8h6krtSgy2L8lNqblqXgjuV-U7pr1ZXPE2K_fOS60kQt9bME6gkqlVffWhku3zsYE/s320/photo+(2).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong></strong> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>The shortest day of the year has passed.</strong> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, we'll slowly see longer days. Right now the sun sets around 4:30. </div>
<strong></strong><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>The full moon is 12/28</strong>. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's nothing better than illumination from the full (or close to full) moon. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Consider planning a night time ski on the clearest pm predicted around the full moon. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the giant headlights come out, it's magic! </div>

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With 7-10 inches of new snow consolidating on the ground, the Forest Service snow gates have been locked and xc skiers and snowshoers have been enjoying the Trillium Lake Loop. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Even though it's not yet the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year, a good blast of winter snow is predicted for the next week.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While it may be gone tomorrow, I have a clear memory of October 20, 1984, when it started snowing in the morning and when it stopped we had 2+ feet on the ground and were snowed in for the winter. Our son was born Nov 11 of that year. It was the earliest snowed in date I've experienced since moving here in the mid 1970s, so that tells you how little we know about predicting when we'll be skiing in instead of driving in. </span><br />

<strong>As the snow melts at the higher elevations wildflowers that bloomed months ago at lower elevation are now in full color. It's quite the trick to see the same species in bloom 3-5 times throughout the summer. Currently the west side of the Timberline Trail is pretty much snow free. Paradise Park ( 6 miles west of Timberline Lodge) should </strong><strong>peak with flowers in the next few weeks. Elk Meadows currently has great displays.</strong><br />

<br />
Here's what Trillium Lake looked like earlier in the week.<br />
While the lake is snow covered, now that the melt has begun it won't take long before it melts. <br />
<br />
We have plowed from Trillium Lake Road past the Summit Meadow Graves towards our cabins. While the snow on the side of the road looks HIGH, it is a result of the loader piling the snow moved off the road surface and not an indication of the surrounding snow depth. <br />

Typically we plow into our cabins at the point that makes the most sense, after the snow has stopped accumulating and a good portion of the last months deposit has melted. With the warming temperatures this weekend and the "rumor" that the road into Trillium Lake may be plowed "any time from now," we expect to be able to drive into our cabins (or within 100 yards of each) before Memorial Day weekend when have openings in all of our cabins. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
It's a GREAT time to visit when the area first melts out. Not only are birds and buds bursting out all over, the spring wildflowers start poking out with the first melting of the snow and you pretty much have the area to yourself. </div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
We've been getting an interesting mix of new snow, sun & clearing, sometimes over the week & more recently all in the course of one day (for several days in a row!) Total snow depth is holding at 3-5 feet (less in some locations) as most of the new snow either compacts or melts.</div>
<br />
Since we typically get lots of snow in March & April, my guess is that we can expect good snow conditions to continue for xc skiing and snowshoeing throughout March and into April. <br />
<br />
A great thing about this time of year is that the days are longer, weather milder and the crowds die down so it's really a GREAT time to visit.<br />

Love letters from our long termed returning guests also remind us of why we're here.<br />
<br />
Lulu and her group spent 6 days last week at the Meadow Chalet and have rebooked again for next year.<br />
She writes:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"As always, we had a fantastic time with multi-generation laughter, music and grand over eating. We even had a wedding proposal out on the trail this year! ahh-memories. Thank you for maintaining the cabin so beautifully. Same time next year-Mon-Sunday." </blockquote>Wendy and Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04325812786160320763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4971012268734495293.post-8095617961981288072012-01-17T19:06:00.000-08:002012-01-17T19:06:28.020-08:00WINTER IS BACK!!!!!<div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ-lAoloAfm6sgnsl4kOy2cdCOFX7ZN1dB32P-d-SpLLCePmAQW343M2vBInnHQ6TgsYjCnWq49M8Svi4dZFJgW546XLT5AAi-nC2lCRVB8UuMswd8ybq4HxVW9TOpFE_fwTpA5ugpyrk/s1600/winter%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" kba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ-lAoloAfm6sgnsl4kOy2cdCOFX7ZN1dB32P-d-SpLLCePmAQW343M2vBInnHQ6TgsYjCnWq49M8Svi4dZFJgW546XLT5AAi-nC2lCRVB8UuMswd8ybq4HxVW9TOpFE_fwTpA5ugpyrk/s320/winter%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
We've received 2+ feet in the first 2 days of this storm cycle and more is on the way! Conditions are EXCELLENT and we're trying to keep up the grooming with all of the new snow that's been accumulating. Although we've been xc skiing and snowshoeing on a great base since Thanksgiving, it's sometimes gotten really thin. Some of the best conditions so far this winter have been in the Trillium Lake Basin and it's been attracting lots of folks including dogsledders....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Gkrwdt3SsPJbxy1spYRuE7nJaLIaTJeNjfzUGv8fPc0PrCaOnJlUvMlgFFu9fZrodaOCpGIQyzH8-_14jsLHOjqdU3mkSPNf0B4eMccVLkNN6YIW-Zyp9kMB9jRkBPZLdDXURgbSvfg/s1600/IMG_0772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Gkrwdt3SsPJbxy1spYRuE7nJaLIaTJeNjfzUGv8fPc0PrCaOnJlUvMlgFFu9fZrodaOCpGIQyzH8-_14jsLHOjqdU3mkSPNf0B4eMccVLkNN6YIW-Zyp9kMB9jRkBPZLdDXURgbSvfg/s320/IMG_0772.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Typically we get most of our snow in the later half of the winter and this year seems to follow that pattern. By March and April we tend to have the most snow, conditions are great and most folks start to lose interest as spring erupts at their homes.<br />
<br />
There's still some weekend opportunities in our cabins as well as a great midweek winter special,<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>Pay for 2 winter midweek nights (Sun-Thurs) and the 3rd is free.</strong></div>
